HARBOUR BOARD

Monthly Meeting The monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board was held yesterday. Present: Messrs W. T. Ritchie (chairman), A. R. Guild, W. Lindsay, D. C. Turnbull, r. L. Garritk, D. C. Kidd, F. R. Flatman, R. S. Goodman, W. H. Orbell, H. M. Whatman, A. F. Campbell, A. G. Foster and K. Mackenzie. Financial Statement The chairman said that receipts since last meeting totalled £3347/4/8, and accounts to be passed that day amounted to £4266/17/10. There was £2300 on temporary loan, making a debit that day of £4053/3/11. At the corresponding period last year the debit was £3Ol/10/7. The chairman went on to say that since the last meeting the new marine superintendent of the New Zealand Shipping Co., Captain Tether, had waited on him and they had had a most interesting discussion on everything that was being done so far as the harbour was concerned. Like a good many other superintendents, Captain Tether would probably be a great help to them in the interests of the Board’s customers. Another point mentioned by Mr Ritchie was that unlike previous years there would be no ei-jort of wheat, except fowl wheat, Lorn Timaru this year. This was due tc the Government's policy that when there was a shortage no South island wheat should go to the North Island. Mr Garrick: There is not enough in the South Island anyhow. Mr Ritchie: That being the case, the North Island has to in .port from overseas. Nightwatchmen At the last meeting of the Board Mr Guild asked that the committee look into the matter of the number of nightwatchmcr employed and their duties. The harbourmaster and engineer reported on the matter, and Mi- Guild said that it appeared from the report that it would not >e possible to make any alteration The chairman said that they had gone into the matter previously, and they had got to the point where they could not reduce without reaching the overtime stage. Employers’ Union Mr Foster was appointed to represent the Board at a meeting of the Employers’ Union in Wellington on April 6, preparatory to the National Disputes Committee meeting.
