HOCKEY
SOUTH CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION The annual report of the South Canterbury Hockey Association, which will be presented at the annual meeting next week, shows that the Association has had a successful and enjoyable year. The competition commenced with four teams in both senior and junior grades. Geraldine w*as compelled to withdraw its junior side, which rather upset the lower grade competition. It is expected that the 1938 season will see the return of the country juniors. The South End Club was successful in winning both the senior and junior competition, and is deserving of the Association’s congratulations for its success and for the high standard of hockey played. The senior team was also successful in retaining the Walker and Hall Shield after defeating the Ashburton team in a strongly contested match. Representative Fixtures Representative games were played against teams representing North Otago. Ashburton and Canterbury, the result being two wins and a defeat. The junior representative game against Canterbury resulted in a decisive win for Canterbury. During the season an Ashburton schoolboys’ team visited Timaru and played a match against a Timaru side. The game was a good one. and should do a lot to encourage the younger players. An endeavour was made to send a team to the West Coast, but the tour had to be abandoned owing to the lateness of the season. It is confidently expected that a team will make the trip during the coming season. Indian Team's Visit During the season advice was received from the New Zealand Hockey Council that an Indian team would visit New Zealand during the 1938 season, and an application was immediately made for a match with the visitors. The visit of a team of stich high calibre should be the means of giving the game a big impetus in Timaru, and the support of all hockey enthusiasts is solicited to make the match a success. The Association regrets the loss suffered in the deaths of the late Mayor (Mr P. C. Vinnell) and Mr J. Fretwell. Both were ardent supporters of the game and will be greatly missed by the hockey players and officials of South Canterbury. The thanks of the Association are due to the Umpires’* Association for supplying umpires every Saturday; to the Y.M.C.A. for the use of rooms; the curator of the Park (Mr A. W. Anderson), the Timaru newspapers and all who have helped to foster the interests of the game.
