WORK ON HIGHWAY Having completed the construction of the two culverts on the Main South Road between McNamara’s Corner and Deep Creek Corner, the contractors have made a start in driving the piles for the new bridge over the Waimata Creek, also on the same stretch of highway. NEW CEMETERY Mr P. H. Morey, Dunedin, District Railways Engineer, visited Waimate on Wednesday and 'with Mr W. P. Black, County Engineer, inspected the area recently acquired by the Borougn and "County Councils for an extension to the Waimate Cemetery with a view to deciding the most suitable position for an entrance. The new cemetery is situated in Lower » High Street, just over the railway crossing. Mr Morey also inspected the old railway bridge at Kurow where a realignment to the approach is to be made on the Hakataramea side. GOVERNMENT HOUSES Although no start has yet been made in the building of Government houses in Waimate, the Department of Housing, in a letter received by the Borough Council yesterday, is inquiring about further building sections in the borough. BOROUGH COUNCIL RATES Up to the closing hour yesterday, the last day for the payment of rates without penalty, the Borough Council had collected £6759 out of a total rate demand of £7393, a proportion of 91 per cent.
