TOUR OF OTAGO

MEMBERS OF FARMERS’ UNION About 100 names have already been received for reservations on the tour of Otago which has been organised for the South Canterbury Provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union, and which will start from the Timaru Railway Station at 8.45 a.m. on Tuesday. The tour, which has been organised by Mr A. C. Cameron, Dunedin, and Mr A. B. Struthers, secretary of the South Canterbury Provincial executive, will last eight days, the party being due back in Timaru on March 23. Entries are still being received though the late harvest has delayed them, but the party will be limited to 150. The tour will be made in private cars and buses. Mr Struthers has received word from Mr Cameron, who will act as guide to the party, that all arrangements in Otago are fully in hand for the reception of the party at the various points to be visited. A comprehensive and varied itinerary programme has been drawn up, and will include not only visits to farms and irrigation schemes, but also inspections of the Cromwell gold fields and dredges. Launch trips on Lake Wanaka and a visit to Paradise will also give the tour added interest and attraction. A party fully representative of the farming community of South Canterbury will make the trip, and will include the presidents and vice-presi-dents of the Farmers’ Union Provincial executive and the Womefl's Division. Young Farmers from Taranaki South Canterbury farmers will, in turn, be hosts for two days to a party of 50 young farmers from Taranaki, on March 23 and 24. The party, consisting of members of the Taranaki Young Farmers’ Clubs, will arrive at Geraldine from Ashburton on the Wednesday afternoon, and after afternoon tea, at about 3.30, will travel through Milford, Clandeboye and Temuka, to Timaru. That evening the visitors will be entertained at a dance in the Otipua Hall, arranged by the Southburn-Lyalldale and Maungati Young Farmers’ Clubs, with the assistance of the South Canterbury District Committee, which intends to take the opportunity to present the cups and trophies won during the year by members of the South * Canterbury clubs. On Thursday, March 24, the party will visit Levels irrigation scheme, and in the afternoon will tour the Waimate district. Members of the Arno, Morven and Waihaorunga Young Farmers’ Clubs will entertain the visitors at afternoon tea at McCulloch’s Bridge, after which an inspection will be made of the Redcliffs irrigation scheme, which has been in working order for two full seasons now, and as a subject of interest will be supplementary to the larger, but uncompleted Levels scheme. The party will then go on to Oamaru, to be received by the North Otago branches of the Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs.
