GIRLS AGAIN

HIGH SCHOOL OLD PUPILS ANNUAL MEETING “Back to childhood” costumes lent a pleasing air of informality to the annual meeting of the Timaru High School Old Girls’ Association last night, when more than 60 members attended in school uniform. Miss Isa Young presided. The annual report stated that the membership was 260, made up as follows: Timaru 120, Dunedin 65, Christchurch 75. Mrs D. S. Kemshed was again elected the Association's Old Girls’ representative on the National Council of Women. During the year the Association was unfortunate in that two of the committee members, Misses Doreen Andrews and Marion Wotherspoon, resigned, the former to be married and the latter to take up a position in Christchurch. It was with much regret that the Association learned of Miss J. R. Barr’s resignation as she had always taken a very keen interest in their welfare. The Association congratulated the various circles on their successful year. Con-

gratulations were also extended to Miss Doris Strachan, who was chosen to join the New Zealand Empire Games team to visit Australia. Misses Isa Young, Margaret Martin and Janet Miller attended the annual dinner of the Dunedin branch held on September 25. Congratulations were extended to Miss Barr and her staff on the excellent examination results for 1937 and appreciation was expressed of the interest that they had taken in the Association during the year. Thanks were offered to Mr J. G. Duncan for auditing the books, Mr F. G. Raymond for the use of his office for committee meetings, and all those who had in any way supported the Association during the year. Loss of Miss Barr In moving the adoption of the report, the president said the year had been most successful. The Sub-Associations were in a sound position and were very active as were all the Timaru groups. “This year we are losing Miss Barr from the School,” said Miss Young. “It was with real regret that we learned of her retirement. Although the School is losing her, the Old Girls are not because once an old girl of the School, always an old girl, and I know that although she is not going to live in Timaru, her very great interest in the old girls personally and in the Association will never wane.” The report was adopted. The following officers were elected: President, Miss Isa Young; vice-presi-dents, Misses Margaret Martin and Janet Miller; treasurer, Miss Muriel Young; secretary, Miss Violet Chamberlain; committee, Misses Mavis Bowen, Joan Higginson, Beth Drennan, Shirley Sumpter, Eula McCubbin, Irene Leggott; new girls’ representative. Miss Nesta McKenzie; representative on National Council of Women, Mrs D. S. Kemshed. Tennis Championship The following is the draw for the Old Girls’ tennis championship:— D. Winterbourn and E. McCann v. S. Sumpter and M. Bowen; J. Miller and B. Holdgate v. V. Chamberlain and J. Doyle; I. Macdonald and M. C. Martin v. H. Tozer and M. Storey; Margaret Martin and M. Young v. R. Storey and N.
