Lord Hailsham, formerly Lord High Chancellor, has been appointed Lord President of the Council in succession to Lord Halifax. Lord Maughan, Lord of Appeal in ordinary and a Judge in the Chancery Division, has been appointed Lord High Chancellor. It is understood that Lord Stanhope, president of the Board of Education,, will relieve Lord Halifax of his duties as Leader of the House of Lords. The Australian Associated Press reports that no political significance attaches to these appointments which ar n merely stop-gaps pending Cabinet reconstruction. Lord Maughan is a brother of Mr Somerset Maughan the famous novelist and playwright.
