MAGISTRATE’S COURT

SITTING IN TIMARU YESTERDAY The following cases were heard by Mr H. Morgan, S.M., in the .Timaru Magistrate’s Court yesterday:— Alfred Daniel Andreassend was charged (1) with the theft of a quantity of clothing, valued at £l3/2/0, the property of Evandrina Sarah Ada Brooks; (2) with the theft of a quantity of carpenter’s tools valued at £36/13/0, the property of Janies William Keiler; (3) with the theft of a quantity of carpenter’s tools, valued at £B/16/0, the property of Philip James Ashley Bradley; (4) with the theft of a quantity of clothing valued at £lO, the property of Monica Mary Burke. Mr A. D. Mcßae, who appeared for the accused, said that the case presented some unusual difficulties. Accused had not yet been asked to plead, and some question had arisen as to accused’s mental condition. He asked for a remand for a week to enable inquiries to be made, and he expected next week to be in a position to enter a plea of guilty on accused's behalf. A remand for one week was granted, bail being renewed as previously. Motor Cases Albert Bruce Haywood, for operating a motor lorry on which the load exceeded the overall width set down by the regulations, was fined £l/10/0 and and costs 10/-. William James Bell, for parking his car in Stafford Street, overlooking Caroline Bay, in a non-parking area, was fined 10 - and costs 12/-. Sydney Lister pleaded guilty to driving a motor truck in Evans Street at a speed which might have been dangerous to the public. Inspector Newcome said that defendant had driven along Evans Street at 40 miles an hour and had gone over intersections at 45 miles and hour. Defendant said that he had received word that one of. his threshing plants had broken down and it was necessary for him to get to it as soon as possible, as 20 men were held up. He had taken care going through the town. A fine of £3/10/0 and costs 10/- was imposed. Similarly charged, Kenneth Gordon McLaughlin, who did not appear, was fined £2 and costs 12/-. Walter McLean Wright also did not appear to answer a similar charge and was fined £3 and costs 12/-. Bums McMillan, for failing to produce a warrant of fitness for his car, was fined £2 and 12/- costs. Cycling Without Eights Stanley Middleton and Ernest Philp were fined 7/6 and costs 10/- for riding cycles at night without a light. Overloading Lorry Ronald Stevens pleaded guilty to driving a motor lorry on which there was a load in excess of that for which the lorry was licensed and was fined £1 and 10/- costs. Maintenance On a charge of disobedience of a maintenance order, Ernest James Nixon was convicted and sentenced to five weeks’ imprisonment in Paparua Prison, he to be released on payment of £l4 arrears. Name Suppressed A young woman whose name was ordered to be suppressed, was charged with the theft of an electric hair dryer, valued at £2/17/6, the property of Messrs Gough, Gough and Hamer, Ltd., Christchurch. Detective C. P. Kemp asked for a remand to Christchurch. He said that it was alleged that the young woman had stolen the dryer from the firm and sold it. Accused had asked that her name be suppressed hi the meantime. A remand to Christchurch was granted, bail being allowed in self £25, one surety of £25 or two of £l2/10/0.
