OHINEMURI J.C.

HANDICAPS The following handicaps have been declared for the first day of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s annual meeting, to be held at Paeroa on March 17 and 19: KARANGAHAKE HANDICAP.

Timaru Trotting Cup The ten horses comprising the Timaru Cup field represent the best class yet collected for a two-mile race at Washdyke, a direct result of the increase in the stake and the tightening of the limit. With a range of only 24 yards-—from 4.30 to 4.2 B—the race should be a spectacular one. The limit division includes Agile, Blair Athol, Isabel Derby and the trotter Sea Gift, and »f the quartette Blair Athol is likely to have most supporters. On 12 yards are Recess (winner two years ago) and Morello, who outpaced the opposition after a slow first mile at Hutt Park a week ago. The back mark is shared by four smart pacers in Gallant Knight, Llewellyn’s Pride, Rongomai, and Renown’s Best, of which Renown’s Best is pretty certain to be the popular choice. The final summing up may be Renown’s Best. Morello, and Blair Athol. Malagigi is usually well back in his races, but once he starts his run he is a hard horse to beat. At Te Aroha in the Morrinsville Handicap, one mile and a quarter, he was last with five furlongs to go, but ran up on the outside and won well at the finish. In tlDynes Fulton Hack Handicap at Pukekohe he did not commence to move up till about half a mile from home. and. running right round the field, was not far from the leaders at the straight entrance. He maintained his effort down the straight, and Glen

Abb just held him off to score by a head. Malagigi is engaded at Paeroa. and will be solidly supported Morello, who has incurred a penalty of 12 yards since the handicaps fo> the Timaru Cup were announced, was a smart three-year-old, and stepped 3.18 when runner-up to War Buoy in the Derby. For two or three years he failed to fulfil the promise then displayed, but he has struck torm again, and while it is not proved that he is a genuine stayer he is likely t< win plenty of two-mile races as these are run nowadays. After being allowed to take 2.22 to pace the first mile at Hutt Park he crowded on the pace and was never in danger ol defeat over the second half of the trip Morello has now won over £l9OO in prizemoney.
