The probability that the white butterfly menace in Canterbury would be reduced next year because of the activity of the parasites was stated by Dr. F. W. Hilgendorf at Tuesday’s meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury Agricultural College. The crops at Massey Agricultural College were seriously injured by the butterflies. “With control by parasites you will always get waves of increases of the moths,” said Dr. Hilgendorf. The director (Professor E. R. Hudson) reported that the weather during February had favoured the development of aphis and the white butterfly, which were prevalent and were doing considerable damage to cruciferous crops. Mr H. E. Herring, M.P., said farmers in Mid-Canterbury had expressed concern over the damage caused by the butterflies, and in reply to his representations. the Minister for Agriculture had stated the the entomologist would make a survey and his report would be available before long.
