GERALDINE

SEALING OF COX STREET AUTHORITY GRANTED At the November meeting of the Geraldine Borough Council a petition was received from 27 ratepayers and residents drawing the Council’s attention to the dust nuisance owing to the heavy traffic in Cox Street, which is the first link in the GeraldineFairlie highway. The petitioners asked if the Council would take some steps to abate the nuisance. The Geraldine District High School Committee also took the matter up at its last meeting, when the dust nuisance as it affected the Primary Department at Cox Street was discussed, and it was decided to make representations to the proper quarter. The matter of tar-sealing Cox Street has been contemplated by the Council for some time, but no provision had been made in this year's estimates for financing the work. With a view to expediting the matter the Town Clerk, Mr C. L. Kirby wrote to the Highways Board conveying the representations of the petitioners. Mr Kirby recently received a letter from Mr F. Langbein, Main Highways Board representative, advising that the Board had approved the tar-sealing of Cox Street, and that the work would carry a £3 for £1 subsidy. The Council will make financial provision for the work in the . estimates for the 19381939 financial year.

BRIDGE WIDENED

ORARI ROAD IMPROVEMENT The elimination of a narrow side bridge at Lysaght’s Creek crossing on installation of a double culvert, has effected a big improvement. Members of the Geraldine County Council staff are at present preparing the approaches and the widened crossing should be in use during the holidays. Several accidents have occurred on this side bridge, and since the new Geraldine District Golf Club links were opened in the vicinity, the road has carried much heavier traffic.

The side bridge will be transferred to Clark’s creek at Tripp Settlement.

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

PRIZE-GIVING AND CAROL SERVICE The prize-giving ceremony of the Geraldine Presbyterian Sunday School took place on Sunday morning when a special children’s service was conducted by the Rev. W. J. Couling. The children’s choir sang “Once In Royal David’s City,” and “O, Little Town of Bethlehem.” As the result of a special collection the Sunday School fund will benefit considerably. In the evening a very large congregation attended the Carol service at which Mr Couling gave a stirring Christmastide message. Mr C. S. Davies was organist and an orchestra comprising Miss D. Ransome (violin), C. Ashby (cornet) and T. P. Crowe (clarinet) enhanced the musical nature of the service. Mr MacGregor Brown (Temuka) sang “The -.ost Chord,” and Misses E. Sherratt and Vera Turner sang the duet "The Virgin Lulls her Infant Child.”

The following items were contributed by the choir: Anthem, “Behold I Bring You Good Tidings”; Carols, “God Bless You, Merry Gentlemen”; “Hail Sweet Infant”; “Good People, Come Hearken”; “The Gift”; “The Moon Shone Bright”; “Shepherds Awake from Slumber Deep” and the hymns, “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing”’ “While Shepherds Watch their Flocks by Night” and “O’ Come All Ye Faithful.”
