NEW YORK TO PARIS AIR RACE
OPPOSED BY AMERICAN AUTHORITIES United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 18, 8.15 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 17. The State Department has notified the French Embassy that the United States Commerce Department will not permit the Lindbergh Trans-Atlantic race on the ground of the risk of needless loss of life.
Senator Johnson said the Department had not decided the exact method of preventing the race, but would probably simply refuse to issue the permits for a take off from American soil. “We have already granted a permit to Mrs Earhart for her world flight, so we won’t withdraw It," Senator Johnson added, “but I would like to. I think she is more valuable to aviation if she remains in this country instead of taking unnecessary risks.”
The officials at Ottawa when informed of the possibility that Paris would substitute a Canadian take-off Indicated that Canada would probably follow the example of the United States. Amy Johnson who is in New York, said she regarded the Commerce riepartment’s decision as narrow-minded. She intends to participate regardless of where the take-off Is planned.
