ACT OF LUNATIC By Telegraph—Press Association WANGANUI, May 18 When Charles Henry Barber, of Retaruke, up the river, appeared at the Supreme Court, charged with, on April 11, with intent to maim, disfigure and do grevious bodily harm to Constable A. T. Breed, of Raurimu, by discharging a rifle loaded with destructive material, the Crown Prosecutor, Mr Bain, intimated that the accused had been under the observation of two medical officers from Porlrua Mental Hospital, who would testify that he was unable to understand the nature of the offence, and was insane.

After a jury specially empanelled, had heard the evidence of '.he doctors, it returned a verdict that Barber was Insane, and Mr Justice Reed ordered him to be detained in a mental institution.
