CONDITIONS IN TIMARU Conditions yesterday were perfect until mid-afternoon when the bright sunshine and mild weather was threatened by the approach of clouds from the south-west. The sky was soon heavily overcast and after a few preliminary showers an intense thunderstorm broke over the town about 6.30 p.m. There was heavy rain for an hour after which conditions cleared considerably. Records at Timaru Park yesterday were:— Barometer at 9 a.m.—29.22. Max. temp.—s7.2l. Max. temp, on grass—33.4. Frost—nil. Wind—S.2 at 6 p.m. Rainfall to 8 pun.—.osins. Rainfall to date thus year—9.4sins. Rainfall to date last year—ls.s7ins. Sunshine—9.s hours. Sunshine to date this year—66o.97 hours.
IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch — The weather was overcast and showery early yesterday with a strong south-west wind. Later the sky cleared and the wind changed to a light north-east. The barometer registered 29.417 in. at 5 p.m. and was then falling. Ashburton—After six points of rain which fell on Tuesday night, following a change after a strong northerly wind fine weather was experienced in Ashburton yesterday. The morning early was dull and a few drops of rain fell, but about 10.30 conditions cleared and the sky became cloudless. The temperature was warm, and there was a light southerly wind. Geraldine.—Air temperatures, min. 42, max. 65, at 9 a.m. 50. Showery early, bright sunshine for several hours, dull with rain in the late afternoon; light southerly wind. Temuka. —Yesterday was dull and cold with a light rain in the morning. The maximum temperature was 53 degrees and the minimum 32. The glass was steady last evening. Waimate (for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. Wednesday): Thermometer, max. 58, min. 45; rain 12 points; bright sunshine, 3 hours 24 minutes; wind gauge, miles run in last 24 hours, 161. Yesterday was bright and sunny in the morning but the afternoon was lightly overcast. Dunedin.—The south-westerly wind which has prevailed during the last few days was stronger yesterday and the temperature was cold. The sun shone throughout the morning but 1 there were light passing showers in the afternoon. The barometer rose sharply to 29.50 inches. The maximum temperature was 55 degrees. CANTERBURY FORECAST Winds—Moderate to strong, between south-west and north-west, freshening at times. Weather For the mast part fair but changeable and with occasional showers in places more especially in the west, temperatures cold with some frosts. Seas.—Moderate in coastal waters, but rather rough to rough off shore.
