STRIKE VIOLENCE AT HOLLYWOOD
RAIDS ON QUARTERS OF UNIONS SALOONS SPLASHED WITH CREOSOTE United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 5, 6.30 p.m.) HOLLYWOOD, May 4. Violence flared up in the strike at the film studios, when one of Hollywood’s most luxurious beauty saloons operated by the four Westmore brothers, who are in charge of the makeup of artists employed by four film companies, was splashc I with creosote, causing fifteen thousand dollars damage. Leading actors continued to penetrate the pickets’ lines, but the pickets are protographlng the stars, some of whom are even posing. The pictures will be used in evidence that the actors are against the strike attitude. British Actors’ Support One of the leading spirits in the attempt of the Hollywood actors to gain recognition of the Screen Artists' Guild is the treasurer of the guild, Noel Madison. Mr Madison, who is the son of Maurice Moscovitch, is at present in London. He inquired from the secretary of the British Equity about the attitude of that body. The secretary replied that Equity members would be instructed to refuse employment at Hollywood, pending a settlement of the dispute. The second outbreak of violence occurred when thirty men armed with clubs and hammers, broke open the doors of the office of the alleged company union and severely beat a dozen persons inside. Four were admitted to hospital with cuts and bruises. The Union leaders have ordered the women to .eave the picket lines. Tills decision is due it is believed, to the increasing tenseness of the situation.
