RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION ’ THE YEAR REVIEWED The committee of the Geraldine Returned Soldiers’ Association will present the following report to the annual meeting of members at the Masonic Refectory this evening:— Your committee has pleasure in reporting that the membership has been well maintained, a total of 130 being on the roll, a slight increase on last year’s membership. We regret to announce the death of Mr William Small after a long illness. His funeral was largely attended by members, and the sympathy of the Association goes cut to his widow and family. Nineteen applications for pensions and war veterans allowances have been dealt with during the year and the majority have been recognised by the Pensions Board. During the year your committee granted relief to necessitous members and their families, and every case brought under the notice of the committee received sympathetic consideration. The Anzac Stamp Campaign was well supported in our district, and apart from the sale of stamps the sum of £44/10/6 was forwarded to Headquarters. The Association desires to thank the energetic citizens, committee and all other helpers who contributed to the success of the Campaign. The annual reunion was well attended by members and visitors, and this function is as popular as ever. There was again a large congregation at the Anzac Day service organised by the Association. The energetic committee of ladies who made themselves responsible for the sale of poppies, collected the sum of £53/16/8 and deserve the thanks of the members for their loyal assistance. The balance-sheet discloses a credit balance of £32/6/8, which with an amount of £3O/0/2 on fixed deposit, plus accrued interest 15/-, makes a total credit of £63/1/10. VITAL STATISTICS The vital statistics supplied by the Registrar, Mr L. S. R. King, show an increase fa the number of births during April. The statistics are as follow, those for April, 1936, being given in parentheses: Births, male, four (four), female, one (four), total, five (eight). Deaths, male, three (nil), female, nil (one) total three (one). Marriages three (four). No marriages were performed in the Registry Office either last month or in April, 1936. BASKETBALL CLUB THREE TEAMS ENTERED At a meeting of the committee of the Geraldine Basketball Club, the entry of senior, second and third grade teams in the Temuka and District Basketball Association’s competitions was confirmed. The president, Mrs J. Powell, occupied the chair Present: Mrs E. Broad, Misses M. Willis, J. MeMeekin, K. Trumpet, M. Gaby, K. Mackay, R. Glover and M. Barrett (secretary). It was reported that the players In the first two teams would have new uniforms for the parade at Temuka on Saturday, which would mark the official opening of the season. The president was thanked for her offer to give the material for a ban- — for the Club. It was reported that Miss Irene Collins had been elected captain of the second grade team, and Miss Edith Waters, vice-captain. It was agreed to elect the officers of the first grade team on Saturday. Several donations were acknowledged with thanks. FOOTBALL CLUB MEETING OF COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Committee of the Geraldine Football Club, held on Tuesday evening, was attended by the president, Mr F. Sherratt, and Messrs L. Neutze, W. A. Robinson, E. Wood, P. Callanan, E. N. J. Hannah. C. Ray and W. McCullough. The president intimated that an endeavour would be made to avoid the withdrawal of the fourth grade team from the competition owing to shorta' of players, but no action would be taken In the matter until the weekly practice night.
Messrs A. Vincent and P. Callanan were appointed the Club’s representatives to confer with members of the Geraldine Hockey Club fa regard to arranging a burlesque match as part of the Coronation celebration festivities. EUCHRE PARTY The second of a series of euchre evenings conducted by the Geraldine branch of the New Zealand Labour Party was held on Tuesday evening when prizes were won by Mrs Henderson (Orari) and Mr F. Tiplady. Mrs Prouting and Master H. Henderson received consolation prizes. SALE OF WORK DISTRICT NURSE FUND To aid the Geraldine District Nurse Fund, a band of ladies, under Mrs M. Burden, held a very successful sale of work in the Parish Hall yesterday. Brisk business was done throughout the day by the stall-holders. Those fa charge of the various stalls were: Outdoor produce, Mesdames F. E. South, G. Wooding, Upritchard, W. I. Ashby; home produce, Mesdames R. P. Nolan, R. A. Dixon and E. Undrill; flowers, Mesdames W. P. D. Barker, J. A. Webb and J. Morrison; sweets, Miss Ladbrook and Mesdames R. A. Bruce and T. C. Clarkson; jumble, Mesdames J. Scott, J. Mcllroy and McNaugton; woollens, Mesdames A. G. Brown and J. H. Lewis; plain sewing, Mesdames Norton and W. H. Broad; Coronation cake, Miss Rattray; refreshments, Mesdames M. Burdon, W. McClure, E. L. M. Fairhall, L. Mitchell and Miss Rattray. Under the auspices of the Geraldine branch of the Labour Party, a grand ball will be held in the Town Hall on Thursday, June 3. The proceeds will go to the King George Memorial Fund.
