BRANCH OF LABOUR PARTY At the annual meeting of the St. Andrews branch of the New Zealand Labour Party Mr G. King presided. The election of officers resulted: Chairman, M’r G. King; vice-chairman, Mr P. F. Dix; scretary and treasurer, A. G. Morrison; executive, Messrs G. Dix, L. Galletley, G. H. Smith, J. Smith, J. Kane, L. Edwards, W. Nicol, E. J. Dash, L. Fenwick, J. Scannell, F. Scarr, T. McCarthy; delegates to Labour representation committee, chairman and secretary, representative of outlying districts, Messrs I. Dempsey and A. Joinas. The cnalrman then introduced Mr D. Barnes, M.P., who referred to the honour that had been conferred upon the branch in having Mr E. J. Dash elected as the workers’ representative to the International Conference at Geneva. The speaker outlined the working of the branches which he said were essential in every district. Mr Barnes proceeded to detail matters relating to the Industrial Efficiency Act and the National Superannuation and Health Schemes. Mr Joines asked how far the term “junk" extended in relation to cars. Mr Barnes said Mr Semple had no intention of putting a car off the road that was reasonably safe. A member complained that in some cases the garages had the right of deciding the roadworthiness of cars and might trade on it. Mr Barnes said he would inquire into the matter Mr J. Kane said the young men in St. Andrews could not get married owing to the shortage of houses, and asked if the Government would consider relieving the shortage under the housing scheme. Mr Barnes said the housing scheme would be used in any district, but the larger centres would have to be considered first. At the conclusion Mr King thanked Mr Barnes for his address. Supper was handed round by the lady members. TENNIS In a friendly match against the Post and Telegraph team at Timaru, St. Andrews were successful by nine sets to five. GALA AFTERNOON
A gala afternoon at the Pareora Domain was well attended, the committee benefiting by almost £2O. The Timaru Pipe Band was the major attraction and spectators were treated to a drum-major’s display and quickstep exercises. Bring and buy stalls and competitions were well patronised. Competitions were won by Miss Sheila O’Connor, Mr F. Lobb, Miss M. Coote, Mrs W. Westoby, Masters S. Whitticase and Moss Munro, and Miss M. Bennetts.
