TENDER ACCEPTED FOR HOUSES leiPt-’iHi.ri <itNo<-iatino WELLINGTON, March 17. Most of the contracts for the erection of houses for the State Housing Department on the Orakei block in Auckland have been secured by the Fletcher Contraction Coy., Ltd., whose tenders were substantially lower than those nearest to them. Under separate contracts the company will build no fewer than 208 out of a total of 212 houses for which competitive tenders were called. The saving to the State in respect of 178 houses in two large contracts will be £99 a house. The Fletcher Company have also obtained a lease of the State’s new joinery factory at Penrose, near Auckland. The rental has not yet been disclosed. The Prime Minister announced this evening that 109 tenders were received for 36 contracts for houses in the Orakei scheme, Two large contracts, comprising 91 and 87 bouses respectively, have been awarded to the Fletcher Construction Co., Ltd. Of the remaining 34 contracts, each of one house, 30 had been awarded to the Fletcher Company as that firm was the lowest tenderer by a substantial margin in each case. The consideration of the tenders for the remaining 15 was not yet complete, as there were certain discrepancies In the tenders submitted by some contractors which required to be cleared up.
