BIENNIAL COMPETITIONS By Telegraph--Prefis Association j. NELSON, March 11. The New Zealand United I’ire Brigades biennial competitions commenced this morning in a cold drizzle which later gave way to bright sunshine. The one man coupling and four men motor events were concluded this afternoon. The Gilberd Memorial and Gold Medal for one man coupling was won by F. H. Steward (Whakatane), who was second in the last competitions. The four men motor, which is the first of the modern events drawn up to cope with a fire off the direct line of route, was won by Nelson. Results:— One Man Coupling. Whakatane, 50sec 1 Hawera, 54 2-ssec 2 Hastings, 55sec 3 Carterton, 57sec 4 Denniston, 58sec 5 Rotorua, 62 4-ssec 6 Twenty-nine started. Four Men Motor Nelson, 28 2-ssec 1 Devonport, 29 2-ssec 2 Hokitika, 33 l-ssec 3 Dannevirke, 34sec t Morrinsville, 34sec t Featherston, 34 l-ssec 6 Twenty-eight started.
