WEST SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE At the monthly meeting of the committee of the West School, Mr E. Laverty (chairman) presided. Messrs J. Timmins, R. W. Marshall, F. B. Knight, N. A. Orr, G. H. Ferguson, P. Nicol, and the headmaster (Mr H. C. Romans). The headmaster in his report, stated: We re-opened on March 1 with a total roll of 517. The number of five-year-olds entered was lower than last year, but the most noticeable decrease was with pupils of 14 and over. Some have gone to the Technical School but a number have started work. On December 15 the chairman was present and presented the Dux medals. In doing so he addressed the whole school and gave the pupils, especially those leaving school, advice that would, I feel sure, assist them in the new world that was to be theirs in the future. The new teachers appointed to the school, Miss Vesty and Mr McDonald, and the two probationary assistants, Miss Brown and Mr Nicol, and the new additional assistant all commenced on February 22 and I feel sure should all prove valuable assistants in the school. It is with extreme regret that I have to report that Mr Barr, first assistant master, has resigned and will at an early date take up the headmastership of the Takaka District High School in Nelson. I wish to place on record my appreciation of the excellent work he has done while a member of the staff and to congratulate him on his promotion. The three pupils chosen to sit for scholarships were all successful. All pupils who sent in essays in the Navy League competition were awarded certificates. Two pupils, Margaret Ellis and June Bowkett were successful In gaining Barclay prizes. Three pupils, Margaret Ellis, June Bowkett and Catherine Taylor, were successful in the recent New Zealand Farmers’ Cooperatve Association staff memorial scholarship examination. The chairman Intimated that owing to pressure of other work he would be resigning from the committee at an early date. Advice was received from the Education Board that the transfer of the section adjoining the school playing area was now finalised. It was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to Mr Barr for the valuable service he had rendered to the school.
