Omnibus Returns Receipts from the Timaru omnibus service for February amounted to £707. 8/21, as against £7BO/10/1 in the corresponding month last year. Windfall For Watersiders As a result of an award ratified by the Arbitration Court last week, making the new scale of wages retrospective to October 1, approximately £3OOO will be paid to New Plymouth watersiders to-morrow. A Costly “Shout” Just before the Orion reached Adelaide, Lord Nuffield “shouted” for the first class passengers and the crew. It cost him £ll7. First class passengers were asked to name their choice. Champagne was immensely popular, £95. And then he shouted for the crew. The crew of the Orion numbers about 400. That lot cost him £22. Aboard the Orion, Lord Nuffield was voted a “sport.” Romantic Strategy That the romantic strategy which lay in. part behind the decision to establish camps in country districts for public works and harvesting was working out well was asserted by Mr J. Thorn, M.P. for Thames, to a meeting of farmers in his electorate last week. The young men from the cities, he said, go along to the dances in the townships near where they are stationed, they meet the local girls, and thereafter are content to stay in the country. Synthetic Wool Evidence of the progress made in the manufacture of synthetic wool from skim milk is afforded in the form of two samples of the commodity which Mr O. Russa, of Rata-o-Rangi, near Te Awamutq, has received from friends in Italy. The “manufactured” wool is remarkably fine and strong in texture, has a silky appearance, and is evidence of the manner in which science and ingenuity can blend to surmount economic handicaps, and perhaps influence the established foundations of world trade. Misrepresentation Alleged Misrepresentation in the sale of a complete set of the second edition of Halsbury’s “Laws of England” was alleged by John Burns Crichton, solicitor, Palmerston North, against Butterworth and Co. (Australia) Ltd., law and medical publishers, in a civil action in the Supreme Court, Wellington, yesterday. The plainitff alleged that there had been a breach of warranty in that the volumes supplied to him were not new, and he sought to recover £57/3/-, the amount paid by him for the books, together with £3O damages for breach of warranty. The case will be continued to-day.
