WINCHESTER

PERSONAL Mr and Mrs A. E. Rissmann, Dunedin, are spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs A. E. Rissman, Winchester. Miss W. E. Alexander of the Postal Department, Winchester, is spending her annual holidays in Christchurch. Mr A. R. Davidson of the Temuka Post Office, is relieving at Winchester. OBITUARY Last Friday evening Mr Arthur William Opie an old resident of Winchester died at the Timaru hospital. Mr Opie, who was the youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs John Opie, was born at Waimate in 1876. He was educated at the Waimate primary and District High Schools. With his parents and the other members of the family he came to reside at Winchester in 1891, where his father and two sons bought a storekeeper’s business. Mr Opie was employed in the business for many years. Mr Opie was a. prominent athlete in his younger days. He played football for the Waihi and Temuka Clubs. When a member of the Temuka Club he played for the South Canterbury representative team that toured the North Island in 1903. He also played against Canterbury in 1904. Mr Opie played cricket for the Winchester Club. He also was a member of the Winchester Miniature Rifle Club. He was married in 1914 to Miss L. Gillum who predeceased him 14 years ago. He leaves two sons and one daughter to mourn their loss. The funeral, which took place on Saturday at the Temuka cemetery, was well attended. The service was conducted by Major H. Chard and Ensign Flintoff. The pall bearers were: Messrs R. Opie (son), C. C. Opie and N. G. South (nephews), and J. J. Kenny. Wreaths were sent by: Doreen, Ray and John, Mr and Mrs W. J. Moore and son, Brother Charles and family, Nellie, Jack and family, Mabel, Gimson family, Mr and Mrs J. J. Kenny and family, Mr and Mrs H. Leatthem and family, Mr and Mrs C. Niles, Winchester, Tennis and Croquet Club, Winchester’ Women’s Institute.
