WAIMATE

IDLE AND DISORDERLY TERM OF IMPRISONMENT Pleading guilty in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to a charge of being idle and disorderly under the Police Offences Act, Albert Keen, farm labourer, aged 53, was convicted and sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. On the Bench were Messrs F. Pollock and J. T. Hay, J’s.P. PERSONAL Miss I. Staples, of Dunedin, is staying at the Royal. Mr A. Body, Sydney, chief staff inspector of the Bank of New South Wales, is visiting Waimate. Mr S. B. Ford, of the staff of the Waimate Post Office, left for Wellington yesterday. The Rev. A. K. Warren, vicar of St. Mary’s Church, Merivale, and formerly of Waimate, has been appointed Archdeacon of Christchurch.

Mr M. T. Ruane, of the literary staff of the Waimate “Advertiser,” has accepted a position on the staff of the “Feilding Star,” and will leave for the north at the end of the week. Mr G. C. Hamilton, manager of the Bank of New South Wales, who has been relieving in Timaru, returned to Waimate yesterday. Mr and Mrs D. M. Stirton, who have been staying at the Royal, left yesterday for a holiday in Dunedin. Mr Stirton has been relieving manager of the Bank of New South Wales. Waimate, and will shortly take up his duties at the Timaru branch. The staff of the Waimate Hotel met to make a, presentation to one of their members, who has recently been married. Mr G. Kilworth, on behalf of the staff, presented Mrs R. Perkins (nee Miss Jessie Jacobs) with an afternoon tea set, at the same tune wishing her health and happiness. Mrs Perkins suitably replied.

A pleasing little function took place at the Waimate Post Office yesterday, when the staff met to farewell Mr S. B. Ford, who has been promoted to Wellington. In making the presentation of a fountain pen and pencil, the postmaster, Mr W. Gundy, referred to the good qualities of Mr Ford, and on behalf of the staff wished him success in the future. Other speakers were Messrs W. P. Wilson, E. E. Earnshaw and A. Edwards. Mr Ford suitably replied. Mr B. S. Runciman leaves for Timaru to-day to attend the Town Clerks’ Conference. » Procter’s, the Opticians, Christchurch, will be making their next professional visit to Waimate on Wednesday and Thursday, 17th and 18th of March, when they may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Royal Hotel.
