RACING REVIEWED

Surprise in Hurdle Race Footwork was withdrawn from the First Hurdles, and in a field of five Vitaphone 416 was in better demand than Havering 248 and Redolent 246. Chrysology and Wexford Bridge were

first away, and at the top the order was Chrysology, Redolent. Wexford Bridge. Chrysology led over the hurdle opposite the stand from Redolent. Vitaphone and Wexford Bridge. The lastnamed made a bad jump and lost ground. Turning into the back Chrysology and Redolent were three lengths ahead of Vitaphone and Wexford Bridge, with Havering further back. Redolent and Chrysology were in charge at the far turn, but at the top Chrysology dropped out, leaving Redolent to lead to the straight from Wexford Bridge and Vitaphone. Wexford Bridge moved up coming to the final obstacle, where he had a slight advantage from Redolent, and after a hard tussle he drew away to win by a couple of lengths, with Vitaphone a length behind Redolent. Chrysology was five lengths away. Havering, who had tailed off, fell lame, and his rider pulled up and dismounted before reaching the home turn. Tight Finish in Maiden Culotte 493, Arrownilla 308, and Desirable 221 were the popular picks for the Ohapi Handicap, for maiden hacks. Culotte from No. 1 berth was quickest to move, and led along the back from Darien and Aggravate, and going to the far turn the leaders were Culotte, Darien, Aggravate, Feg Peak and Arnownilla. Round the top Culotte, Darien, Arrownilla, Fog Peak and Rebel Mate were prominent. Culotte, Arrownilla and Darien were first into the straight, with Desirable making up ground. Darien looked to have a slight advantage half way up the straight, but Culotte, Arrownilla and Desirable all finished well, and in a fine contest Arrownilla beat Culotte by a neck, with Desirable half a length away a head in front of Darien. After a gap came Shawlett, Fog Peak and Roseman.

Cup to West Coaster Queen Dorothy was the only defection from the Geraldine Cup field, in which backers selected Wino 533, Davolo 453, The Surgeon 403 and Rona Bay 316. There was some delay at the barrier, Monipere being stubborn and Golden King showed his heels rather freely, on one occasion planting them on Davolo. Golden King was railed off on the outside. When the field had settled down Gold Cross, Wino and Cleaner were disputing the lead, and as they ran past the judge’s box the first time the reading was Cleaner, Wino, Daring Deed, Monipere and Gold Cross, the last two being Tout le Monde and Rona Bay. At the six furlongs Cleaner, Wino, Daring Deed, Davolo, Gold Cross and Monipere were in the van, and going to the far turn the call was Wino, Cleaner, Davolo, Gold Cross, The Surgeon. Tout le Monde then made a fast run, and turning for home the leaders were Wino and Davolo just ahead of The Surgeon, Tout le Monde and Monipere. In the run home Davolo and Monipere drew away and the West Coaster beat Davolo by a neck. The Surgeon was three lengths away, with Tout le Monde a length further back, then came Daring Deed, Gold Cross, Cleaner and Golden King. Zincali Unlucky There was no pronounced favourite for the Geraldine Trot, those with most admirers being Zincali 208, Little Derby 187, Janet Gaynor 183, Serene Bingen 162, and Pukeuri 160. Rhinegold, Great Don, Colleen Wrack, Serene Bingen, Post Haste, and Tapdancer led a big bunch past the stand, and turning into the back (six furlongs from home) the front division comprised Rhinegold, Great Don, Post Haste, Colleen Wrack, Elite Rey, Jambo and Tapdancer handy and Zincali and Serene Bingen also close up. The field presented a fine spectacle as they straightened for home, but over the final furlong Elite Rey and Zincali forged ahead, and Elite Rey defeated the three-year-old by a neck. Serene Bingen and Hytemoana finished fast, Serene Bingen being a length behind Zincali and half a length in advance of

Hytemoana. The next in a big bunch were Great Don and Tapdancer. Zincali lost a good deal of ground at the start, and paced a fine race to finish so close up. Runaway Win in Sprint. Grey Honour 718 was made a raging favourite for the Squatters’ Handicap, from Bay Duke 313 and Arena 208. From a quick start Great Star was first to show from Arrowrose, Capital and Grey Honour. Arrowrose took command at the end of a furlong, and going to the far turn Arrowrose and Bay Duke were well clear of Great Star and Grey Honour. Bay Duke ran to the front at the top. and led into the home stretch from Grey Honour, Rebel Chief. Great Star, Arrowrose and Capital. Bay Duke was never troubled, the Riverton gelding winning easily by three lengths from Grey Honour, who defeated Capital by a length. Great Star, who lost his place on the home turn, was running on again in fourth place, just ahead of Rebel Chief and Gaysome. Another to Riverton Willie Win, Fiord, Monipere and Cape Gabo were struck out of the Raukapuka Handicap, and of the remaining sixteen backers plumped for Epic 484 and Jack Ahoy-Stolen March 414. There was some delay at the barrier, Patricia Holm, Silver Lark, Heloise, Stolen March, Jack Ahoy and Lady Kate being the chief culprits. The tape went up at an inopportune moment, with Patricia Holm backing away. The Washdyke filly took no part in the race, and Silver Lark, Stolen March and Heloise lost all chance. Jack Ahoy from No. 1 failed to jump quickly and was chopped right back. Epic, Universe, Rose of Tralee, Elbanor, Wild Career, Double Gift and Cyclonic were

those which got off best, and at the far turn Rose of Tralee and Epic were out clear of Wild Career and Cyclonic. Epic and Rose of Tralee were first into the straight, but they left the rails and Wild Career shot through and came on to win easily by two lengths from Epic, who beat Rose of Tralee by a neck. Poniard was fourth, two lengths away, then came Cyclonic, Convivial. Elbanor and Jack Ahoy bunched. Wild Career, like Bay Duke, is trained at Riverton. Fay Rey Outstays Opponents There were three well-backed candidates —Frisco Boy 547, Irish Aggie 486, and Fay Rey 429—in the Orari Trot. Frisco Boy was one of several which broke at or just after the start. Shrewdie, Lux Lunae, Reno and Greatfast led out of the straight, but on the lower bend Cam Dillon dashed up to them, and turning into the back the reading was Reno, Shrewdie, Cam Dillon, Greatfast and Lux Lunae, at the head of a bunch. At the five furlongs Reno and Cam Dillon were leading from Irish Aggie, Greatfast, Shrewdie and Dual, and racing round the top this lot were joined by Fay Rey and Gold Salute. Fay Rey headed Reno soon after reaching the straight, and the Tinwald mare forged ahead to win by two lengths from Shrewdie, who, who wore Reno down and beat him by the same distance. Dual, Irish Aggie, Gold Salute and Greatfast were next. Small Field Provides Thrill The retirement of Capital left five runners in the Belfield Handicap, and of these speculators showed a marked preference for Epris 878 and Matoru 707. Epris was squeezed back at the start from which Matoru led out of the straight from Queen Dorothy, Carfex and Acla, who were racing in line. Turning into the back Matoru was just clear of Carfex and Queen Dorothy, with Acla handy. Half a mile from home Matoru and Acla were together in the lead, and they ran round the top curve showing about a length of daylight from the other three, who could not be separated. Epris, Acla and Matoru turned into the straight

together, but Epris was carried out wide, and although he looked a win- * ner a furlong from home. Queen Doro- I thy, who got a shorter passage on the | inside, got up to beat him by a head, ! Matoru was a neck away, half a length in front of Carfex, with Acla close up. • HANDICAPS FOR TO-MORROW [ The following handicaps have been declared for to-morrow:—
