DOUBLE SHIFT FOR DREDGE Because it would involve an extra annual cost of about £BOOO, the Timaru Harbour Board at yesterday’s meeting dismissed an idea that the dredge might work a double shift to facilitate the dredging programme. The Standing Committee reported that figures were supplied showing that based on the present wages, coal. etc., the cost of a double shift would be approximately £B,OOO a year. The dredgemaster (Mr Hayne) was in attendance, and could not see the need for a double shift, seeing that the dredge had only been working about half the time in Timaru. He thought that if the dredge worked as at present, it would be able to cope with the work. The committee recommended that the dredge carry on as at present. “We are not in a position to do it,’’ said the chairman (Mr T. B. Garrick). There was now no anxiety about the port. The engineer (Mr B. W. Charman) explained that under present working conditions the shift was sufficient. If the 40-hour week became operative amongst the dredge staff, however, a double shift might have to be considered. Working now an hour a day extra it was possible to lift an additional two loads a week, said the engineer. The committee's recommendation was approved.
