DANGEROUS HABIT

“DOUBLE BANKING” ON CYCLES “It is a dangerous habit and that is why the by-law is made,” remarked Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when he imposed a fine of 5/- and costs on John Davie, Russell William Robertson and John Gibson for carrying passengers on the bars of their cycles. Inspector D. Cameron said it was a fairly common offence. “Another by-law which I see repeatedly being broken is cyclists going along with both hands in their pockets, wobbling from side to side,” commented the Magistrate. The result would be that a car would come along and the cyclist might be killed. In the first prosecution of its kind in Timaru, John McMahon was convicted and ordered to pay costs for cycling more than two abreast in Church Street. For cycling at night without lights, Robert Atkinson, Tom Casey, John Clarke, Gordon Gillespie, Bernard Peter Collins, George Hall, John Home, William Neilson, Jack O'Keefe, and Robert Peebles were each fined 10/and costs. Glen Barclay was charged with driving a lorry between Rangitata and Hinds at a speed exceeding 25 miles an hour. He was represented by Mr W. D. Campbell. A fine of 10’- and costs was imposed. George Henry Mulligan. William John Adams. Hector Harry Harris and Frederick George Lewis were each fined 5/- and costs for driving without licenses. For permitting a lorry to be loaded 1 ton 4 cwt in excess of its classification, H. Gould and Co. were lined 10/- and costs.
