AFTER HOURS TRADE
LICENSING CHAIRMAN’S COMMENT There are still too many people being found on- licensed premises after hours, accordtag to the Magistrate <Mr C R. Orr Walker. S.M.). who presided over the quarterly meeting of the Timaru Licensing Committee yesterday at which there were present Messrs A. S. Bird. J. P. Newman, D. McLennan and G. Bowker. The police report, submitted by Inspector T. Shanahan, showed that during the quarter, one licensee had been convicted for a breach of the Act and eight persons had been found on licensed premises after hours. The conduct of the hotels generally was satisfactory. In making the comment set out above, the chairman said that the licensee referred to in the inspector’s report had since transferred his license. Repairs were being made at tha Royal and Empire hotels, which was satisfactory. Referring to a proposal to erect a gate across the rightaway leading from Sophia Street to the rear of the Dominion Hotel, the chairman said there were difficulties in the way and the committee preferred to let the matter stand over in the meantime. A transfer of the license of the Empire Hotel from Emily Francis O’Leary to William Quirke was granted.
