WASHING HINTS
Always make your starch before commencing your washing, and cover the bowl with a cloth to keep it free from dust and leave to cool until needed. Starch those articles which need to be very stiff first—cuffs, collars, aprons, tablecloths, serviettes, etc. Children’s cotton frocks, overalls, etc., require thinner starch, and a little water can be added for this purpose. Very diluted starch is required for muslins, curtains, organdies and laces. Put them through the ringer and hang to dry in the open air. Before washing knitted garments or those which are Inclined to stretch, either measure them first and pull them as they dry on a flat surface, or lay them on a piece of cotton fabric, outlining them with a tacking stitch so that when they are washed you can tack them on to the fabric, again pulling them to the right size, and allow to dry, flat. Squeeze silk and delicate fabrics In lukewarm suds. Do not twist or wring. Dull-finished silks need to be ironed dry; shiny silks can be ironed damp. Do not sprinkle silks with water for ironing; it frequently leaves patches or spotty marks. Fasten a piece of material to the side of the ironing board to form a pocket to hold long articles such as sheets, etc.
