LOOSE COVERS
CHARMING PATTERNS At one time loose covers were merely used to cover a multitude of sins, but now they hold a prominent place in our schemes of decoration. And this is not really to be wondered at, because they arc so very charming nowadays. There is such a wide variety of materials now offered in the shops that it is sometimes really difficult to choose between them, but there a certain points to remember when choosing material for loose covers. If your room faces north or is dark in aspect choose a bright pattern, but remember that i colour can be bright without being crude, so choose tones which, though warm and striking, will yet blend harmoniously with the rest cf your furnishings. If your room is rather low a perpendicular stripe in your material will help to give the impression of height, and if it is small c ’ fully furnished avoid big patterns. A perfectly plain material will look much better—but if you must have a pattern see that it is small and neat. Smooth-surfaced materials keep clean longer than rough or hairy-sur-faced cloths to which dust and dirt stick. Although it is not difficult for a woman to make her own loose covers, there arc one or two points which should always be remembered. The covers should fit quite loosely, because they may shrink the first time they are washed. Do leave plenty of materia) to tuck into the back of the chairs and couch, because this extra stuff will keep the covers in position. A cover which has to be dragged and fits too tightly will wear out much sooner than one made to fit easily md comfortably. Paper are seldom practicable for making loose covers, as the sizes of chairs and sofas vary very much, and it is better to pin the material on to the furniture and cut it out there and then. If done carefully this produces a very neat and “lail- ( ed” result.
