Miss Whatman gave a very comprehensive report on the conference for which she was thanked. TESCHEMAKER The Teschemaker Women’s Institute celebrated its fifth birthday party in the school. There was a large attendance of visitors and members, and the bright warm afternoon helped to make the function an enjoyable one. The schoolroom was gay with spring flowers and marigolds, the latter being the Institute flower, the shades of which were also admired in the birthday cake, made and iced by the president, Mrs A. Mills. The proceedings opened with a speech by Mrs Mills, who welcomed the guests, and hoped that all would enjoy themselves. The programme was as follows: Pianoforte solo, Miss B. Meyer; songs, Miss A. Gregan; a play, members of the Esk Valley Women’s Institute; recitations, Miss P. Gregan. Games and a competition and a display of the year’s work in arts and crafts by the members were next on the programme. Great interest was shown in the artistic work exhibited by Mrs A. McKenzie until recently a member of the Temuka Women’s Institute. Afternoon tea was enjoyed by all and the birthday cake cut and distributed. Mrs W. E. Mills (as group president) before lighting the first two candles, congratulated the members on the good work done during the year, and wished all “many happy returns.” Mrs Bishop, Esk Valley, then lit two candles and conveyed greetings from her Institute. The last candle was lit by Mrs A. Mills as president of Teschemaker Women’s Institute. The candles were blown out by Master Edward Scott, the first Institute baby. The cake was cut by Mrs H. B. S. Johnstone (president of the Otaio Women’s Division) and by Mrs J. Wallace (Hunter Women’s Institute) who each conveyed greetings and good wishes.

A letter from Mrs Vincent (president Otipua Women’s Institute) expressing regret at her inability to be present that afternoon, and wishing all a happy birthday, was read. The prizes for the year’s competitions were presented by Mrs W. E. Mills, as follows—Most points in all competitions: Miss McFarlane 1, Mrs B. Powell 2. Arts and crafts: Mrs R. Keown 1, Mrs A.
