NEW ZEALANDERS REACH SEMI-FINALS
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph- -Copyright (Received August 31, 10.20 p.m.) ADELAIDE, August 31. The quarter-finals of the women’s golf championship of Australia were played to-day in brilliant sunshine and excellent conditions. Both Miss Kay and Mrs Fullerton-Smith entered the semi-finals. Many followers of the game anticipate that the New Zealanders will contest the final.
In the quarter-finals, Miss McKenzie (Victoria) played a solid game but Miss Kay (New Zealand) always had a little in hand. Her long game was good, particularly her drives, but she was unlucky on some of the greens, putts of seven feet and under repeatedly hit the back of the cup and stayed out or ran p: Miss Kay was out in 42 to stand 1 up. She lost the next two holes, but won three of the succeeding four, and clinched the match by taking the 17th at par five. Miss Fleming (New Zealand) won the first two holes with stymies, but three putts on the fourth green made her only 1 up. Sde turned for home 3 up. Miss Hutton (Victoria) then began a devastating run, winning five holes in succession. Miss Fleming took the 15th with a beautiful birdie four and squared the match at the short 16th. The next was halved, but the Victorian took the match with a par four’ at the last, when Miss Fleming duffed her iron second.
Mrs Fullerton-Smith (New Zealand) had only one bad hoi on the outward run, which she covered in 42. This was at the third, where she drove into the sand and took seven, losing the hole. Otherwise she was in fine form, turning 3 up. She took the 10th and lost the next two through weak seconds. The New Zealander made a magnificent recovery at the 13th, a dog leg hole, where she pulled her drive into the sand. The he was good and she played her wood to reach the green. She approach-putted short, leaving herself a downhill putt of 12ft, but she sank it for a win. She also won the next although both played badly, then halved the 15th for the match. She appeared a little nervous after the turn.
The greatest surprise was Mrs Negus’s defeat of Miss Clements (New South Wales), the only Australian woman on scratch. The golf play by Mrs Negus was not good but Miss Clements was appalling. She took 51 out and was 4 down. Her chip shots were extremely weak. Miss Ciem at 3 began to play better on the home run. After losing the 10th she was too far behind although she won three holes in a row and stymied Mrs Negus at the 16th, from 18 inches when Mrs Negus w T as dormie 3. They halved the 17th where the match ended. Mrs x'ullerton-Smith should beat Mrs Negus, but Miss Kay may have to be at her best to beat Miss Hutton, who is the most improved golfer in Victoria this season. Quarter-Finals: The quarter-finals resulted: Miss O. Kay (New Zealand) beat Miss McKenzie (Victoria), 2 up and 1 to play. Mrs Fullerton-Smith (New Zealand) beat Mrs Britten Junes (South Australia), 4 up and 3 to play. Mrs Negus (Western Australia) beat Miss R A. Clements (New South Wales), 2 up and 1 to play. Miss E. M. Hutton (Victoria) beat Miss V. Fleming (New Zealand), 1 up. Draw for Semi-Finals: To-morrow Mrs Fullerton Smith meets Mrs Negus. Miss Kay meets Miss Hutton.
