KITCHEN WISDOM
Rolled oats crisped in the oven, and crushed with the rolling pin, are very nice for coating fish, etc.. Instead of using crumbs.
A little muslin bag of powdered charcoal hung in the meat safe will keep the meat fresh a long time. A very little finely-grated horseradish added to mayonnaise gives it an unusual flavour.
Nex time you use tinned cream try whipping it a little with some fresh milk and a pinch of sugar. If you have no refrigerator you can keep ice cream firm for quite a long time by storing it in a vacuum flask. A small teapot is a good emergency substitute for a feeding cup when a person is ill. If stamps or stick-on labels become stuck together, placing a warm iron on them will separate them. When cleaning a dirty sink, use a little turpentine. It will remove all grease, and the odour evaporates quickly. If you use half a lemon, put the remainder under glass; a tumbler will do. This will exclude the air, and preserve the lemon.
