The non-stop London to Newcastle L.N.E.R. silver jubilee streamlined express, attained a maximum of 113 miles an hour—a world record for steam haulage. The express hauled eight coaches, weighing 270 tons, and averaged 110.8 miles an hour during the six miles on a falling gradiant of one in 265.
