BOWLING

PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD REDUCED TO 15 By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, January 9. After the two concluding rounds in the sectional play in the pairs championship at the New Zealand bowling tournament had been completed this morning, 59 pairs were eligible for post-section play, of which two rounds were played in the afternoon. In the running of the pairs competition the number of wins which a rink gained to win or tie in its section were not counted in the post-sectional play, which was on the sudden death system. The number has now been reduced to 15.

Most interest during the day was taken in the post-sectional singles match between M. Walker (Auckland) and Bremner (West End, Auckland), two of the best known competitors in the tournament, each of whose chances was fancied for the 1936 singles title. The match attracted hundreds of spectators to the St. Albans green, and was the most exciting game which the tournament has yet produced. Walker, whose command of length was superb, gained a lead in the first few heads, only for Bremner almost to equalise later in the game with some brilliant driving shots when Walker was lying two or three. Several times Bremner retrieved brilliantly for himself, killing the head with remarkably accurate drives. In the closing stages Walker maintained his accuracy of length to go into the lead again by a substantial margin. In the last head the score was 19-13 in Walker's favour with Walker lying the shot. Bremner tried to save a bad position with a drive, but he went an inch or two astray to leave Walker the match 20-13. Every head in the match was closely drawn, and the game gave as good an exhibition of drawing as has been seen in Christchurch for years. By the match Bremner was eliminated from the singles, leaving Walker, who is the only bowler ever to have won the singles title three times, still in the running. Other singles games nearing the finals will be played as men are available.

A New South Wales rink (J. C. Redmond, substitute, of Wellington, and S. Morris) came through the five sectional games in the pairs without suffering a loss, and they defeated some notable opponents. They also survived the first two rounds of the post-sectional play. One other New South Wales pair (Packer and Law) also were eligible for post-sectional games, and in the first round they beat A. W. and F. K- Pirie, of Napier, by a substantial margin. They also won the second game, and thus there are two New South Wales teams now in the final.
