CYCLING

CREMIN TO VISIT AUSTRALIA

Jack Gremin, the promising 20-year-old Timaru v’heelman will soon have his big chance to prove his ability against Australia’s crack racing .cyclists. He will leave Timaru shortly in company with W. Good of Christchurch. for a two month’s tour in Australia, under a contract made through the Australian cycling stars, Joe Walsh, all-round track champion and Len Rogers, 25 mile title-holders who are now touring the Dominion. The pair were authorised before leaving to engage two of the most promising New Zealand cyclists to return with them for an engagement of two months. The Australian authorities did not want necessarily the star performers met in the Dominion but the two showing the most promise. Jack Gremin who has been chosen as one of the two, has been riding only two years and although he is a natural wheelman, he owes all his knowledge of track and road racing to his elder brother. Experts declare that with first-class coaching and experience which Gremin is certain to receive on the Australian tracks where he will have to ride at all carnivals, he should develop into a high class cyclist. The Australian pajr, in Christchurch described him is being the makings of a champion. All expenses will be paid and a coach provided for the New Zealanders during their stay in Australia, and they will take all their winnings from races. Gremin has performed very creditably on tracks from Ashburton to Oamaru, his best efforts being his victories in the mile and half mile New Zealand titles at Oamaru last year.

AUCKLAND-WELLINGTON

By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, January 8. Nearly 30 hours were clipped off her own time, from Auckland to Wellington by Miss V. Baird, who arrived at 8.45 a.m., taking 50hrs 33min, against her 79hrs 40min in March, 1932. Although she had only four hours sleep, she looked remarkably fresh and fit. She had hoped to do the trip in 50hrs, but made a detour over the heavily metalled Sanson-Bulls Road, and lost about two hours she had in hand. She said this would be her last attempt to break the record for the trip. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS By Telegraph—Press Association WANGANUI, January 8. The Council of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association has approved of the New Zealand championship meeting being held at Wanganui on February 29 on Cook’s Gardens. The track has recently undergone improvement and is the finest cycling track in New Zealand.
