THE DEMOCRAT PARTY

To the Editor of “ The Timaru Herald ” Sir, —In a recent address to the electors of Masterton, the Miibister of Finance stated that the>Ueademof, the Democrats had been indignant •• and very much annoyed when the Government compelled the trading banks to hand over the gold held by them at the standard price (approx. £3/17/11 an 07,.), instead of the appreciated price that it had risen to. This, sir, I believe is important because it gives the public* a somewhat true impression of the outlook and views of the leader of the Democrat Party. During the war, the banks gathered in the people’s gold and gave notes in exchange, and as Mr Coates explained, the appreciated value really belonged to. the individuals who had deposited the gold with the banks. Thus it will be seen that when the real owner could not be found the Government was right and just in its action. It would be interesting to know just from where the funds to meet each Democrat candidate’s expenses and to generally pay for the large amount of propaganda issued by this Party, came. The attitude of the Democrat Leader on the transfer of the gold was surely not consistent with one who has the rights and welfare of the people of New Zealand at heart.—l am, etc., i HONESTY OF PURPOSE.
