MOTORISTS FINED

RACE DAY CHARGES Motorists who left the line of traffic on October 19, a race day at Washdyke, were dealt with In the Timaru Magistrate’s Court yesterday by Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., for breaches of the regulations. Gordon William Moore was charged with driving a motor car in a manner dangerous to the public. Traffic Inspector Ashwell estimated defendant’s speed at 40 miles an hour when he pulled out from a line of traffic. A fine of £2 with costs 10/- was Imposed. A plea of not guilty was entered by Joseph Templeton, who was similarly charged. Traffic Inspector Ashweil said that defendant pulled out of a line of traffic at Washdyke and passed several cars. He approached the Washdyke bridge abreast of another car and caused a jam of traffic as a car was approaching the bridge from the south and another was crossing from the north at the time.

In reply to defendant, witness said that the speed was not fast at any time. Defendant’s explanation was that his sleeve caught in the throttle and forced him out of line. He tried to get back, but another car prevented him from doing so. The Magistrate considered that defendant’s driving had been dangerous after he left the line of traffic and fined him £1 with costs 10/-. Ernest P. Henshaw was fined 10/with costs 10/- for overtaking a car within 150 feet of the crest of a rise where the driver had not a clear view. On a similar charge, Otto James Wilson was fined 10/- with costs 10/-. Baden Trevor Cobum was charged with driving a motor car in Evans Street at a speed which might be dangerous to the public. Traffic Inspector Cameron said that defendant left a line of cars in Evans Street on a race day and proceeded for some distance on his wrong side at a speed of 30 to 35 miles an hour. Defendant was fined £2 with costs 10/-. Other Cases Edward Dennis Wilcox was charged with driving a car in Stafford Street at a speed which might be dangerous to the public. This man has been repeatedly warned for speeding,” said Traffic Inspector Cameron, who said that defendant approached the intersection of Cannon Street at a speed of 30 miles an hour. ■ A fine of £2 with costs 10/- was imposed. Said by Traffic Inspector Cameron to have passed the Bay viaduct at 35 miles an hour, Ernest Peter Henshaw was fined £2 with costs 10/-. Roland Peter Woodward, for driving a car in Evans Street with inefficient brakes, was fined 15/- with costs 10/-.
