The New Zealand Trotting Register has become a maze of “sire" names, and racegoers are finding the situation positively bewildering. The list of registrations is mainly composed of Logans, Pointers, Nelsons, Bingens, Suns, Mokos, Chimes, Worthys, Axworthys, Directs, Wars, Guys, Parrishs, Potts, Locandos, Audubons, Grattans, Wracks and other “pedigree” names, and it is to be hoped that the subcommittee set up by the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association to suggest suitable names for young horses will be functioning shortly.

In one season in New Zealand K. Voitre rode 110 winners and while he did not succeed in a New Zealand Cup or Derby, that will not worry him now, with the Melbourne Cup—Derby double to his credit. Voitre won two Auckland Cups, on Admiral Drake and Gold Trail, sjnd one Wellington Cup, so that his record in big races, is an imposing one. He is now in the happy position of J. E. Pike, whose fame rests very largely on hand-picked mounts such as Phar Lap, Winooka, Chatham and Peter Pan, and he will be rushed with opportunities to ride good horses.

The following riding engagements have been made for the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting: A. E. Ellis, Vintage, Emissary, Beau Gallante, Top Rank, Wild Chase, and Fracas; L. J. Ellis, Cuddle, Knoekfin, Chidden. Moonbeam and Paper Slipper; M. Kirwan, Gold Cross; D. Cotton, Riptide; R. Beale, Polydora; J. W. Jennings. Kemal Pasha and Rebel Chief; R. J. Mackie, Madam Pompadour and Rose Val; D. O’Connor, Rasouli; B. H. Morris, Silver Streak; C. T. Wilson, Tuirau, Viking, Joyous, Glowlight, Sir Hugh, Golden King ated Alma or Superex; R. Marsh, Vanestep; H. W. Hibberd, Grey Honour, Grand Review and Sky Rover; A. E. Didham, High Glee, Valarth and Southdown; H. N. Wiggins, Fersen, Variant, Plato and Kotou; P. Atkins, Heritage, Walton Park, Lowenberg; J. McFarlane, Haut Monde, Haere Tonu and Owlsgleam; S. Wilson, Argentic; A. J. Peart, Monastic and Horn’s Reef; G. Barr, Joppa; R. W. Savage, Sunee; C. Thomson, Red Sun; R. E. Walsh. Caliente; E. A. Leckie, Quite Soon; M. Caddy, Golden Dart; A. C. Messervey, Tout le Monde; C. Hughes, Olive Smith; D. Bush, Arctic Star; W. E. Pine, Dawning Light, Rompalong and Bodyline; E. Pinn, Top Coat. Pink Coat’s Harcourt Cup

“Did Pink Coat beat anything in the Harcourt Cup?” asks a reader. The answer is emphatically yes, as the field was much stronger than the one Kinnoull disposed of this year. The starters were Pink Coat, Seatown, Concentrate, Commendation, Hunting Cry, Silver Paper, Vertigern, Kick Off, Hoylake, Eaglet and Speed Light, so that the field was a distinctly hot one. Commendation had previously won both Derbies and St. Legers, Welcome Stakes. Wellesley Stakes, Awapuni Gold Cup and Avondale Guineas. Hunting Cry’s victories included those In the Great Northern Derby, Railway Handicap, Easter Handicap and King's Plate. Concentrate had won the Auckland Cup, Wellington Cup, two St. Leger’s, and later was winning the Melbourne Cup when he broke down. Silver Paper captured the Dunedin Guineas, and Challenge Stakes, and Eaglet accounted for the Avondale Guineas, Great Northern Guineas, and New Zealand Oaks. Vertigern won the Wellington Cup and Awapuni Gold Cup; Seatown was a good handicap performer; while Haylake and Speed Light both won races. Pink Coat beat this lot decisively after breaking down at the home turn. If, as has been suggested, in the north, Kinnoull is as good as Pink Coat, the running of Monday’s Derby would be a mere formality.
