GERALDINE

GAPES VALLEY INSTITUTE

CONCERT AND DANCE A most successful concert and dance under the auspices of the Gapes Valley Women’s Institute was held in the hall on Friday evening. The three one-act plays which were staged did great credit to the performers, many of whom came from a distance, and the applause of the audience testified to their appreciation. Before the curtain rose, the president (Mrs J. Ashby), welcomed those present, thanking them for their support. The first play, “Moving In,” was staged by the Gapes Valley Drama Circle, those taking part being Mrs A. Mackenzie, and the Misses Le Lievre, J. Chapman, Bigham aijd R. and E. Reid. The second play, “Money Makes a Difference,” by the Geraldine Players, was a most amusing comedy, the cast being: Mrs W. H. Kirk and Messrs G. R. Knibb, J. J. Mulvey, L. King and G. White. The third play. “Mr Henshaw’s Double,” by the Orari Readers, was also full of humour, the three characters being taken by Mr W. E. Cook and Mr and Mrs W. J. ; Johnston. A Dutch dance, in costume, by six of the school children. Jessie. Merle and Phyllis Patrick, John and Russell Donnithome, and Wilfred Waller met with hearty applause, and the young performers responded with an encore. Mrs A. Mackenzie was the accompanist. A charade was acted by Mrs F. Reid, Miss E. Reid, and Messrs A. Mackenzie and L. and R. Reid. The two words represented were solved by Mrs A. Toomey and Mrs C. G. Hibbs. Mr L. Reid was the winner of a competion for a picnic hamper made at the Institute for the Blind. After supper, which was supplied by the Institute members, dancing was continued for several hours, music being supplied by Mr J. F. Prentice. Extras were played by Mrs Reid and Messrs Aschen and R. Patrick. Mr A. Blair acted as M.C.

FOOTBALL CLUB The weekly meeting of the committee of the Geraldine Football Club, held on Tuesday evening, was attended by the president (Mr W. H. Jackson), and Messrs S. Lawson. A. Loach, I. Anderson. L. Neutze. K. Loach. P. M. McKenzie. J. Stevenson, H. South, G. Pratt, H. Wilson, E. Wood, and A. H. Stringer. A motion of thanks was extended to Mr H. Morrison in appreciation of his generous donation to the Club. The secretary of the South Canterbury Rugby Union wrote advising that the Club’s fifth grade entry in the competition had been accepted. VICTORIA LODGE The N.G., Bro. J. Webb, presided at the fortnightly meeting of Victoria Lodge No. 18, 1.0.0. F., when there was a good attendance. Accounts and sick pay amounting to £lB/13/4 were passed for payment. Invitations to their annual balls were received from the Hakatere Lodge (Ashburton), Alexandrovna Lodge (Temuka) and Loyal Lodge (Waimate). Supper was provided by Bro. J. S. Jones. Competitions were won as follow: Scallywag, Bro. L. Neutze; cribbage, Bro. N. S. Watt; quoits, Bro. R. Barrett.

CRIBBAGE The following are the results of the third round of the Geraldine and District Cribbage Association’s competition played on Tuesday evening: Bowlers 32 beat Citizens 20, Raukapuka 26 beat Oddfellows 24, Orari Bridge 35 beat South End 16. NOTES The Basketball and Football Clubs’ combined dance will be held in the Town Hall to-night. The annual meeting of the Geraldine Secondary Ex-pupils’ Association will be held in the Parish Hall at 8 pjn. next Tuesday, May 21. The annual meeting of the Geraldine R.S.A. will be held in the late Mr Kennedy’s rooms to-morrow at 8 p.m. Procters, the Premier Opticians, Christchurch,* will be making their next professional visit to Geraldine, on Wednesday, 19th June, when they may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel.
