WAIMATE

THE HOUNDS MEET AT MORVEN

GOOD HUNTING Last week the Waimate Hunt met at Mr Morriss’s, Morven, and as usual this district provided an excellent day’s sport. Rain commenced in the morning and continued all day, but there was a splendid scent. Hounds threw off behind the homestead and a hare was found after two fields had been tried. She took a good line south across the road into Mr Crowe's, and after giving riders a very fast burst over stiff country for at least two miles she turned righthanded up a road towards the railway line. Unfortunately this proved to be a fresh hare, but hounds were well away and after passing through three fields she turned towards the sea across the Glenavy road and then left-handed into Mr Crowe’s and took a direct line towards Mr Morriss’s again. As puss laid up in a big gorse fence and hounds were unable to find her again, horses were given a breather. A fresh cast was made in a field nearby and another hare was soon afoot and ran across the homestead road. Owing to uncrossable country hounds had to be whipped off. Hounds were now taken further down towards the sea and some fields on the lefthand side of the road were tried without result. Going across the road into Mr Morriss’s again hares were still scarce and as the weather was not improving hounds were packed up, and followers returned to Mr Morriss’s, where those in cars provided afternoon tea. The followers were: The Master (Mr C. Douglas) on Waikari, Huntsman J. Shaw on Peter, Mrs H. Harrison on Heave Ahoy, Misses J. Johnstone on Tasman, L. Winter on Red Peter, J. Harper on Macduff, J.
