ARSON CHARGE

ACCUSED ACQUITTED By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, May 14. Charged with wilfully setting fire to two haystacks, Chanel Patrick Murphy, a labourer, aged 22, was found not guilty. The stacks were valued at £l2O and £175 respectively. Murphy had made two statements to the police, one on the morning of the fires denying complicity, and the second admitting having caused .both fires. In evidence Murphy said that his first statement was correct. He had made the second statement because he was told by detectives that by making it he would save others from getting into trouble. Prisoner was discharged.
