Wanganui races begin to-morrow. The first race at Ashburton on Sat urday will start at 12.30.

Handicaps for the South Canterbury meeting will appear on Friday.

Peter Pan’s exact winnings, including the value of trophies, now amount to £32,010/10/-.

Gold Knight is back in E. J. Ellis’s stable where he received his education as a hurdler.

First Song broke a blood vessel last week, and his Victorian trip has been cancelled.

R. Townley has taken over the training of Dinner Bell, a speedy pacer who so far has not shown sufficient staying ability to win races.

Mr A. C. Mills states that an offer of 2000gns was made through a Melbourne firm for Tauramai, but was not accepted.

Applications for trainers’, jockeys’ and apprentice jockeys’ licenses for next season should be made by the end of this month.

S. G. Ware will leave for Australia in a week or two with a small team of Mr G. J. Barton’s horses and possibly one of his own.

Lochlaggan has fallen lame again, and has been sent out for another holiday. The speedy daughter of Glentrum has caused her trainer a lot of anxiety during the last two years.

An attempt is being made to get another race out of Aladdin, who has been nominated for the Craigmore Steeplechase. He is being trained by his owner near Christchurch.

Mistral, who is among the big batch of two-year-old pacers entered for the South Canterbury meeting, is by Wrack from Trix Pointer, and is fully related to Wrackler and Arethusa.

Rasouli’s entry for the Great Northern Hurdles was received too late, but he has been nominated for the Remuera Hurdles, Campbell Hurdles, and Greenlane Steeplechase, to be decided at the meeting next month.

Gold Knight and Fleeting Glance, who have been entered for both the hurdle race and the steeplechase at the South Canterbury meeting, are new to steeplechasing, but both have had experience in brush hurdle racing.

Queen of Diamonds, a two-year-old filly by Captain Bunsby, from Diamond Ring, is on her way to Victoria, where she will be raced by trainer P. Hoysted, to whom she has been leased by her breeder, Mr W. S. Glenn.

Mr W. R. Kemball, whose lease of his stud farm has expired, has sold all his mares, but he has retained 16 foals for racing. Now that he has gone out of the breeding business, he will probably be a buyer at the yearling sales, where his competition will be welcomed.

With 87 wins to his credit, and the end of the season two and a half months distant, L. J. Ellis has very bright prospects of scoring a century this season. The New Zealand record for a jockey is 123, made by K. Voltre two seasons ago.

“Impromptu is undoubtedly the best pacer we have produced for many years, and there are more successes in store for this brilliant son of Pedro Pronto and Petrova,” states a South Island paper. Apparently the writer has not seen Harold Logan at his best, or Roi l’Or or Indianapolis.

The fourteen horses nominated for the Farewell at the South Canterbury meeting are collectively the best lot entered for a sprint at Washdyke for some time. Rebel Chief, Cranford, Guarantee, Southdown, Kemal Pasha, Merry Peel, Cherry Queen, Grecian Prince, Hula Bell and Cyclonic provide material for a nice betting field.

The entries for the South Canterbury May meeting number 172, an increase of 15 on last year’s total. Comparature figures for the two years are

157 172 In London “Sporting Life” last month, the “Special Commissioner” remarked that the extraordinary success of Blandford’s stock is no doubt responsible for the fact that the great part played by Hurry On and his sons in the turf history of the world is being forgotten by most of our breeders. Unlike Toute Suite, who stood barely 14.2 hands high, Hurry On was a big, lumbering, clumsy horse that could never be trained as a two-year-old. He came to hand in his second season and won the Beacon Stakes, Stetchworth Plate, Newbury Stakes, September Stakes, Newmarket St. Leger and the Jockey Club Cup, carrying stakes of £3248. An unbeaten horse, Hurry On retired to the stud, and since his first crop of two-year-olds appeared in 1921, he has been responsible for the winners of 327 races worth nearly £300,000. His stock include the victors in three Derbies, one St. Leger, two One Thousand Guineas and two Oaks. His sons, as sires of winners, have made good names in almost every part of the world. Town Guard has earned a high reputation in France; Hunting Song headed the list of winning sires last season in New Zealand; Roger de Busli is doing well in Australia; and Sereth occupies sixth place among the sires of winners in South Africa. In England, Coronach, winner of £48,224 in stakes, commands a fee of 300 guineas and is regarded as only just reaching his prime as a sire.

Isaacs, who won the Trial Plate at Nelson on Monday, is a massive three-year-old by Lord Warden from the dam of Rabbi and Kozan. He is not tuned up yet, and good things are expected of him.

Pukeko followed up his two seconds at Riverton by a double win at Nelson, but his mate Walton Park was beaten in the principal event each day by Korero. It was not surprising that a lumbering galloper like Walton Park was beaten hi a mile and a quarter run in 2.16, but Korero repeated the dose at a mile on the second day. Korero, who is owned by Mr J. F. Corry, of Blenheim, finished third in the Great Autumn last month.

For the Dannevirke Racing Club’s meeting at Woodville, arrangements are being made for the use of an electrical releasing device in connection with the starting barrier (says a northern paper). This attachment, which is the invention of Mr C. Savage, of Wanganui, enables the starter to take a position in advance of the field, and so obtain a full view of the horse. (There is nothing new in this, as the method has been used on some South Island courses for years.)

An Auckland paper computes that New Zealand horses have won 134 races this season ii Australia.
