GRANT OF £SOO
WELLINGTON CITY MISSION By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, May 14. A grant of £SOO from the funds of the latest art union is to be made to the Wellington City Mission whose men’s shelter has been in danger of closing owing to financial difficulties. This announcement was made to-day by the Hon. E. A. Ransom and the Minister of Health, the Hon. Sir Alexander Young, who, with the Minister of Employment, Hon. S. G. Smith, heard an appeal on behalf of the embarrassed mission from a representative Wellington deputation including the Mayor, Mr T. C. A. Hislop. The deputation asked for a straight out grant on the plea that the succouring of between 250 and 260 “down and outs” every night was a national liability. Mr Ransom pointed out that if the Government agreed to such a request a very big question would be raised since similar institutions throughout the Dominion would demand equal treatment. Sir Alexander Young made it clear that the grant must be used for the relief of distress and not for the payment of the mission’s debt on debentures.
