CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
KING S JUBILEE HONOURED The children of the Catholic schools held their entertainment in honour of his Majesty’s Jubilee in the Sacred Heart Hall on Friday. The boys from the Marist Brothers’ School, the girls, and small boys quite filled the hall. The Rev. Father Murphy, S.M., presided. There were also present the Rev. Father Seymour, S.M., the Marist Brothers, Reverend Mother and members of the community. The girls opened the concert with several pleasing choruses. The boys from the Marists’ School carried through the second portion of the programme. These well given choruses and artistically sung solos were delightful, as were also the instrumental solos and dancing items. The concert over, Father Murphy addressed the children, reminding them that they had come together to continue their celebration of the King’s Jubilee, which had begun on May 6, when, in the Sacred Heart Church, they had been present at the Mass of thanksgiving offered there for all the blessings bestowed on their Majesties and on the Empire during the last 25 years. As they had heard Father Bartley’s forcible discourse on that occasion, there remained little for him to say in addition. Nevertheless, he again aroused their enthusiasm, showing how very deserving their Majesties were of all the loyalty and respect tendered to them. He emphasised in particular how, during the troublous times of the Great War and under the long wa’:e of depression that since had passed over the world, the hearts of our Sovereigns had gone out so sympathetically to their distressed people. Further, no one could deny the great moral influent of their Majesties and all they had done to keep high the moral standard of the nation. For that, as well as for all the rest, w'e, as part of that great far-flung Empire, must ever remain faithful, loyal subjects. Father Murphy then unveiled pictures of the King and Queen, and all present sang the National Anthem. The girls remained in the hall, and he presented to representatives of each class a lightly bound copy of the jubilee number of the Auckland Weekly, and a book to be placed in each class library. Before leaving to partake of the refreshments provided for them, the children gave three cheers for the King.
