PETROL STEALING
ACTIVITY IN WELLINGTON Unusual activity among the everpresent petrol thieves has been reported in Wellington in recent weeks, instances being announced particularly from the vicinity of Courtenay Place and Marjoribanlis Streets, where there are favourite parking places for theatregoers. Cars have been interfered with in other ways. The wheels of a car were tampered with so that one came off when it was crossing a busy intersection. The nuts had been removed while the car stood parked. The inconvenience caused by these actions is obvious, and the dangers are easily imagined. The unexpected loss of power by a car may cause it to stop in the middle of a busy street, in a tunnel, on railway rails, or at some such awkward or perilous place. Cars with vacuum tanks will run quite a distance with the main tank drained, so that the driver is taken by surprise. The results of a wheel coming off need hardly be pointed out. The injury or damage may vary from a broken part to a capsize, or the knocking down of somebody by the errant wheel.
