RACING & TROTTING

On And Off The Track A BUDGET of news and views FIXTURES Racing: May 11—Amberley R.C. May 11, 13—Nelson J.C. May 16, 18—Wanganui J.C. May 17, 18—Marlborough R.C. May 17, 18—Southland R.C. May 18—Ashburton County R.C. May 23, 25—Te Kuiti R.C. May 25—South Canterbury J.C. Trotting: May 11—Oamaru T.C. May 11, 13—Waikato T.C. May 16—Marlborough T.C. June 1, 3—Canterbury Park T.C. Amberley races to-day. The first race at Oamaru is due to start at noon. Entries for the South Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting on May 25 will be received until 9 p.m. on Monday. Among the two-year-olds to race at Oamaru is Waitaki Power (Travis Axworthy-Waitaki Girl). If there is anything in a name he should race well at that course. The crack English jockey Gordon Richards can still go to the scale at a handy weight. He made 7.9 (21b. overweight) to ride in the Chester Cup this week. After spending a little over three months at the Westmere Stud, the Limond —Veil colt, purchased at the Trentham sales in January for 2100 guineas on behalf of Mr E. E. Jolly, was shipped to South Australia this week.

The list of dates approved for next season by the Canterbury District . Committee is a tentative one for recommendation to the Dates Committee . of the Conference, which will confer , with the Trotting Conference before : making final recommendations. ; • • • • Although the Forbury Club abandoned one day of its winter meeting, it still has the privilege of using the permit if a suitable date can be secured before the season ends on July 31. That may prove difficult, in addition to which a one-day meeting might not appeal to Addington and other Canterbury trainers. As a result of her disappointing form at the autumn meetings, Korokio has been retired from racing and she will go to the stud next season. Korokio promised to be really good in the early part of her career, but while she was a good winner and successful in the New Zealand Oaks, an injury she received was considered to be a factor in her failure to reach expectations. Grand Mogul, who went into F. C. Dunlevey’s stable after the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting in March, was stated to have passed into the ownership of Mr G. J. Barton, but this was subsequently .denied and the pacer continued to race in the name of Mr A. McLeod, of Balclutha. It is now authentically announced that he has been bought by Mr Barton, whose colours he will carry in future. The following riding engagements have been made for the Amberley meeting:—L. J. Ellis, Wino, Fiord, Polygraph and Quietly; G. H. Humphries, Royal Gallant, Master Tony and Riptide; A. Russell. Tail Light and Colombo: H. Turner, High Speed; W. Lawson, Radiant Rose; A. E. Ellis, Gay Crest and Coalpit; M. Kirwan, Gold Label and Manetho; E. Ludlow, Teresina; H. W. Hibberd. Royal Amphora; E. J. Pinn, Golden Dart. One direction in which King George has not met with the success he deserves is in racing. He won the One Thousand Guineas with Scuttle, but that is his only classic win. Since he started racing in 1911 his horses have won 150 races, but the total in stakes has been only £86,000, or less than £4OOO a year, which would not go within a long way of paying expenses. King Edward won three Derbies, and everybody would be happy if the same good fortune fell to his son. The Wanganella, which sailed from Wellington for Sydney on Thursday, took a batch of yearlings to Australia. W. McConkey sent eight over on behalf of Mr W. R. Kemball. Five of them are to go to G. Jones, and three to M. McGrath. Mr W. S. Glenn sent two to Sydney, one. Queen of Diamonds (Chief Ruler—Diamond Ring), being leased to trainer P. Hoysted. Two Australian-owned yearlings that have been at Westmere, two from T. R. George at Trentham and one from Elderslie completed the list.

There are 22 entries for the Novice j Plate at Amberley, three more than the j “safety number” for the track. It is unlikely that a division will be necessary, but if one is required the field will be split up as follows: First Division—Coalpit, Gold Label, Malvasia. McHeath, Polygraph, Proscenium. Rotokino, The Surgeon, Doctor Duthie, Matron, Taillight. Second Division—Doyer Patrol, Honour's Lass, Master Tony, Nardoo, Pompeii, Ponty, Teresina, Cape Gabo, Fiord, Panegyric, Universe. The totalisator will be opened only once, and if there is a division dividends will be paid on the winners only. Horses likely to be favoured by backers at Amberley are:— Brush Hurdles—Fleeting Glance, Coll. Novice Stakes.—Malvasia, Tail Light, McHeath. Glasswin Hep.—Capital, Cleqner, Manetho. Kowai Trot—Hidden Charm, Cream Harvester, Cadiz. Starky Memorial—Grand Review, Wino, Royal Gallant. Seadown Hep.—Colombo, Bella Rosa, Knowledge. Amberly Hep.—Quietly, Gay Crest, Courtyard. Teviotdale Trot—Hidden Charm, Olive King, Cream Harvester. The sting will be out of the ground at Oamaru to-day, and horses likely to return dividends in the 70—20—10 allocation appear to include the following:— Innovation Hep.—Discord, Princess Guy, Sonoma Boy. Advance Hep.—Self. Dual, Seamark. President's Hep.—Taxpayer, Cragsnour (if started). Bracken. Papakaio Handicap Battlefield, Royal de Oro. Rocks Ahead. Waikaura Handicap—Air Flow, Ann Parrish, Wrackless. Enfield Hep.—Craganour, Taxpayer, Master Roy. Stewards’ Hep.—Dillon Queen, Noble Prince, Sea Trail. Electric Hep—Rocks Ahead, Directum, Black Jester. The Sapling Stakes, run on the second Saturday in June, invests the slow class races in May with special interest. as it is on form therein revealed that backers select a fancy for the two-year-old classic. Two years ago the Oamaru meeting introduced War

. Buoy, who In a few seconds placed the I result of the Stakes beyond reasonable i doubt. There may be an embryo War Buoy engaged to-morrow, but that is unlikely, as pacers of his class are not born every season. Valpeen, with 11.12 in the Great Northern Steeplechase, has soared in the weights since he won last year with 9.4. but in the interim he has annexed the Grand National with 10.9, the Beaufort with 11.9 (he fell in the Lincoln with 12.1), and the Sussex Steeplechase at the Royal meeting at ! Ellerslie, and has earned his weight. Billy Boy, third in the last Grand National with 11.13, is dropped to 10.13, and has been given a great chance. Tudor seems to have his full deserts with 11.3. Two With recent wanning form are Biform 10.5. and Ruby Meteor 9.13, and both look capable of staying the distance.

View Halloo, who tops the -weights in the Cornwall Handicap at Auckland with 9.5, won a year ago with 9.0. but it was not anticipated that he would be placed above Kiltowyn 9.4, who has more recent winning form. Sporting Blood and Kelly, both three-year-olds, have been given 8.11 each. Sporting Blood won a handicap at Avondale with 8.3, and Kelly won on the second day with 8.5 on a slightly higher scale, so that the assessment between the pair looks a fair one. Might has been given a chance with 8.8. and M°nanui reads well at 8.3. If a lightweight is to win it may be the promoted hack King Rey 7.3, who has made rapid improvement lately.

Roval Lineage woii the Sydenham Hurdles on the last day of the Grand National meeting with 10.0, and at Ellerslie he won over two miles with 10.13. but at 11.4 he does not make much appeal in the Great Northern Hurdles. Tudor at 10.10 is another who seems to have received his full allotment. A more attractive proposition appears to be Wee Pat 10.6, who won the race last year under 10.1, and finished second with 10.7 at Ellerslie at Easter, being beaten by Verden 10.7, who comes into the Great Northern Hurdles on 81b worse terms. Emancipation 10.5, was second two years ago and third last year, each time with 10.0, and seems to hold a chance. Val Watch 10.5, is too hard a puller for a two and a half miles assignment. Verden 10.4, won at Ellerslie last month with 9.11, but an additional half mile may worry him, though he has improved a lot since he left Riccarton. Cargen 9.3 and Stanchion 9.0 may be the best of the lightweights. Wee Pat, Emancipation, Verden, Cargen and Stanchion look as well as anything at this stage.
