WAIMATE
BAD CONDITIONS FOR RUGBY RESULTS OF THE PLAY Wet weather prevailed for this week’s games in the Waimate Rugby Sub-Union’s competitions. Some good football was witnessed. Southern v. Glenavy Shortly after the start of play Todd, Allnutt and Crowe put Glenavy on attack, but McNeill marked and lined at the Red 25. Here Glenavy infringed and Balfour turned the penalty to account. Southern 3, Glenavy 0. Good work by Crowe, Bee, Henry, and Walker again had Southern defending, but the greasy ball was difficult to handle, and several scrums in midfield saw play amongst the forwards for some time, till Hunt kicked down to the Glenavy 25. Here K. Veitch received from the loose and ran strongly to near the line, where his pass saw Regan go over in a good position. Balfour converted. Southern 8, Glenavy 0. Glenavy forwards again went on attack, but Hunt, Bryce, and Veitch came back and Maiaharoa lined at half-way. Brown shortly afterwards sent his backs away, the ball going right along the line to Samways whose in-pass saw Regan score wide out. The kick failed. Southern 11, Glenavy 0. Half-time was sounded shortly afterwards. Play on resuming was for some time confined to loose forward rushes by either side with T. Fleming also gaining ground for Glenavy with serviceable kicks. Eventually the Southern backs were caught out of position and the ball was kicked over their line for Crowe to dive over and touch down. The kick missed. Southern 11, Glenavy 3. The play travelled up and down field with Southern gradually gaining the advantage, but the defence held till near the call of time when Balfour broke through to touch down near the posts. The same player converted and the game ended. Southern 16, Glenavy 3. Mr F. Wilce was referee. Huimai v. Old Boys
At the opening of play Huimai forwards attacked and play hovered near Old Boys’ line until White forced. Huimai came back, but McKenzie saved with a good kick to the 25, and the White forwards carried on well into Huimai territory. W. Lundy received from a scrum and sent out to R. Lundy who was pulled down near the line where, from a penalty Martyn landed a good goal. Huimai 3, Old Boys 0. Martyn put in a good run to past Old Boys 25, where he had an unsuccessful penalty kick, and from the drop out Old Boys in a dribbling rush took play well into Huimai territory. In a rucking movement the Whites were penalised and McKenzie kicked a neat goal. Huimai 3, Old Boys 3. Infringements were fairly frequent at this stage, Martyn narrowly missing with two kicks at goal. Cumming and Lundy combined in a good run but McKenzie held the movement up. Shortly afterwards Cumming again received and dived over at the corner. Wesley missed with the kick. Huimai 6, Old Boys 3. After half-time Wyndham snapped up a dropped pass, and took play to Old Boys’ 25, where Huimai set up a passing rush, but O’Loughlin intercepted and kicked back to half-way. Old Boys were on attack for some time till Huimai forwards in loose rushes took play back and from a ruck Davis fielded and dived over under the posts for Wesley to convert. Huimai 11, Old Boys 3. The Whites battled strongly to even the scores, but the defence held and after an unsuccessful penalty kick by Patterson the game ended: Huimai 11. Old Boys 3. Mr J. K. Clarke was referee. Juniors Old Boys defeated Southern by 12 points to 3, tries being scored for the winners by T. Calder and G. Bennett, and J. Neal kicking two penalty goals. For Southern G.
