HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT
The Department of Agriculture has received the following message, dated May 4, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London: — Tallow Fair demand at auction. Present spot quotations are:—Mutton: fair to good, 27/6 to 30/-; dark to dull, 25/to 26/-. Beef: sweet and/or mixed, 28''- to 30/-; fair to good, 26/6 to 28/-; dark to dull, 25/- to 26/-. Mixed: fair to good, 26/6 to 27/6; dark to dull, 25/to 26/-; gut,etc, 24/- to 26/-. Hemp Manila: Market quiet; little better tone. “K” grade for May-July shipment sold £l3. Sisal: Better demand during last few days. No. 1 for May-July shipment sold £ls/7/6. New Zealand: Small business done in High Points £l7. Sellers quote Fair £ls/15/0; Common £l3/15/0, which is 10/- above buyers ideas. Fmit Tuscan Star, Tamaroa, and Zealandic apples and pears generally in good condition. Slight waste; market steady. Current prices for apples are: Cox’s Orange, 10/- to 16/-; Granny Smith. 11/- to 14/-; Delicious, 10/- to 12/6: Jonathan, 8/6 to 12/-; Cleopatra, 9/- to 11/-; Dunn's Favoui’ite, Adams Pearmain, Sturmer. 8/6 to 10/-; London Pippin, Lofd Wolseley, Ballarat, 8/6 to 9/-; Otago Cox’s Orange, 12/to 20/-; Jonathan, 10/- to 12/6; Cleopatra, 9 - to 10 6; Dunn’s Favourite, London Pip Din, Lord Wolseley, 9/- to 10/-. Pears: Market weak owing to libei-al supplies. Current prices are: Comice, 12/- to 14/-; Beurre Bose, 10/- to 11/-; Winter Cole, Louise Bon Jersey, 8/6 to 11/-; Conference, Packham’s Triumph, Josephine, 8/6 to 10/-; Beurre Clairgeau, Keiffer, P. Barry, 7/- to 9/-; Beurre Capiamont, 7/- to 8/-; Otago Pears—Comice, 12/- to 14/-; Winter Cole, 11/- to 13/6. Peas Maples: Demand disappointing after beginning of month. Tasmanian: Sold down to 54/- for April-May shipment. Afloat —offered at the same price. New Zealand: New crop—afloat—sold 56/6; later 52/6 to 54/-. May shipment —offered—s7/-. No buyers.
Blues: Tasmanian spot sold £9/10/0 ex stoi-e. No business on account of forward shipments. Shippers price entirely out of range. NEW ZEALAND PAPER MILES, LTD. Tre report for the year ending March 31, 1935, states that after making provision for bad and doubtful debts, depreciation and income tax there is a balance of £22.709 17s 3d. An interim dividend of 3 per cent, absorbed £4500 and left £18.209 17s 3d. The directors recommend the payment of a final dividend of 4 per cent., which will take £6OOO and that the balance of £12,209 17s 3d oe earned fonvard. The extensions to buildings and plant are well forward. Every effort is being made co expedite matters and they have no doubt that the extensions will be fully justified. With the Mataura River there have been some unusual experiences. For eleven weeks the river was very low and this drought was followed by a heavy rise which lasted for an abnormal period. The river is now normal, and is likely to remain in that state for some time.
