Mr O. E. Hooper (Rakaia) is staying at the Dominion.

A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mrs W. Fraser at the meeting of the Mackenzie County Council yesterday. The Rev. Melville Holmes, formerly assistant curate at Karori, and now assistant curate at Tauranga, will go to England in May, in order to gain wider experience. Messrs S. C. Black, P. Dunlop, J. C. Clark (Dunedin), L. F. Withers (Christchurch), A. O. Fielden, R. G. Button and F. W. Barton (Wellington), are registered at the Empire. Sergeant D. Vaughan arrived from Dunedin on Thursday and assumed his new duties with the Police Force in Timaru yesterday. Sergeant Vaughan replaces Sergeant J. Hodgson, who has been transferred to Frankton.

At the meeting of the Mackenzie County Council yesterday a motion of sympathy was carried with the relatives of the late Mr Arthur Hope. The chairman (Mr Geo. Murray) said that Mr Hope was at one time a member of the Council, and in the development of the Mackenzie Country he had done a great amount of work. Messrs A. Cossor, E. Purchase, E. Irwin (Christchurch), K. W. Wright, W. Miller. H. J. Duff, E. O. Withelmsen, C. Hanneton, A. Bedford, A. McAllister, A. Cannon. I. Clements, E. Grant, P. Beaumont (Dunedin), W. S. Corbett (Wellington), A. S. Froggatt and R. N. Todd (Invercargill) are staying at the Grosvenor.

A motion of sympathy was passed to the chairman of the Mackenzie County Council (Mr Geo. Murray) at the monthly meeting of the Council yesterday in the death of his brother 3Hr Charles Murray, of Marlborough. In moving the motion, Mr H. H. Fisher said that he had known the late Mr Murray for many years and the county had lost a very practical man. The retirement on superannuation of Mr G. Thorne George, manager of the Napier branch of the New Zealand Insurance Company, Limited, will take effect on May 31. Mr George joined the company in Auckland in 1893, and he subsequently served at Calcutta, Bombay, Singapore and Shanghai. He became manager at Gisborne in 1911, and he was appointed to the Napier branch seven years later. Mr H. Willis, who has been trust manager in Auckland since 1925, will succeed Mr George and he will take up his new position on June 1.
