BATHING TRAGEDY

A BOY’S GALLANTRY By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, February 7. While bathing in a tidal creek at Otaua, near Waiuku, this afternoon. John Wirth, aged 42, single, a native of Switzerland, got into difficulties and was drowned. Two determined attempts to save Wirth *;ere made by Raymond Sterger, aged 14. Wirth was a heavy man and struggling violently, he pulled Sterger beneath the surface. The boy managed to fight his way clear and swam to the shore to get a rope. Returning a few minutes later with a line he found that Wirth had sunk to the bottom, and although he spent some time in diving, he could find no trace of him. The body was recovered three hours later. Wirth had been living in New Zealand for the last nine years, but he is thought to have no relations in the Dominion.
