MAIN EVENT TO HUNTING JAY By Telegraph—Press Association GISBORNE, February 7. The Poverty Bay Turf Club’s summer meeting opened to-day in most inauspicious weather. Last evening the heaviest downpour for many weeks was experienced, and heavy rain fell continuously to-day until the last race, when the downpour temporarily ceased. The track was greasy and towards the end of the day the going was heavy. The totalisator handled £2113/10/-, compared with £2393 on the first day last year, a decrease of £279/10/-. Results:— FIRST HURDLES, Of 70 sovs; 15 miles. 1— Sunny Song, 10.0 (Stratton) 1 4—Kahunoke, 10.12 (Horne) 2 2 Cottsfield, 10.5 (Clements) .. .. 3 Also started—3 Grumpy 9.0. Won by two lengths, four lengths between second and third. Time—2min 50 l-ssec. TELEGRAPH HACK HANDICAP, Of 65 sovs; 7 furlongs. 3 Quaint. 7.1 (J. The only starters. The race was run in a particularly heavy shower. Hunting Jay was first to show out, and at the seven furlongs post was leading Bothwell by a length, with Sunny Sky a length and a half back. There was no change in the order throughout, but in the concluding stages Sunny Sky fell further back. Bothwell put in a strong challenge in the straight but Hunting Jay finished a head to the good, with Sunny Sky lengths back. Time—lmin 45 l-ssec.
